The storyWhy “Stronghold”?
A 1920 building permit, football games in the alley behind the house, a movie at the Sylvan, and a neighborhood name that stuck.
Reservoir Park changed the neighborhood.
The former McMillan sand-filtration site reopened with a 6.2-acre public park and recreation center. It puts an indoor pool, fitness center, playground, splash parks, large lawn, historic fountain and the Olmsted Walk right beside Stronghold.

The alley behind this house helped name the neighborhood
The Sylvan Theatre, from our history bookletMore than a place to sleep.
19 Channing was one of six brick houses authorized together in 1920. Four decades later, neighborhood boys played football in the alley behind the house. Their Midget Colts team, a trip to the Sylvan Theatre and the phrase “going back to the Stronghold” became part of the story behind the neighborhood’s name.
